Interesting survey

A month or two ago author Jim Hines invited published authors to participate in a survey that would look at how people broke into publishing. (I participated.) After approximately 250 responses, he has just published the first part of
his results.

I really like his approach to a subject that is fraught with rumor and recycled opinion. There is so much he said/she said that floats around the pub-o-sphere, I was happy to see something halfway scientific. Jim explains his methods which are certainly not Gallup quality, but certainly informative.

My take?

So far, the results meet my expectations. As one who finds it tough to capture the rhythm and pacing of short stories, I was very happy I could break in without writing them! (I am one of those data points.) And the Eragon story is not exactly an everyman kind of story.

There are some interesting comments after the posting as well.

Erm, not sure this is the most appropriate post of yours in which to write this, but I wanted to tell you how much I am enjoying Flesh and Spirit! Please pardon my layman's terms, but your wording is magnificent and characters fascinating. Very believable. And I don't even LIKE fantasy! (And I know I shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but those covers totally caught my attention.)

So I just wanted to thank you for writing your stories. Obviously, I'll be picking up Breath and Bone next.

This is a fine place to say such wonderful things! Thank you. Hope you like B&B as well.

(Same anonymous as above) I just devoured Breath and Bone - not read, definitely devoured - and LOVED it.

Thank you for such amazing stories. The characters are very believable and the mysteries well-entwined.

And I suspect that you relished writing Osriel's role almost as much as Valen's!

Indeed I DID relish writing Osriel as much as Valen. Actually he was much more forthcoming than Valen. And Kol - well, the fun just doesn't get any finer for a fantasy writer.

I'm not surprised to learn Valen's writing process was stubborn...how like him!

As for Kol, I think sometimes characters just seem to write themselves. It's eerie.

I do love this universe and would like to throw my vote into the "please add another book to the series" lot. :) Thank you!
